North Shore Strong

Neighbors Helping Neighbors.

On Kauaʻi’s remote North Shore, where emergency resources are limited, being prepared and ready to help one another is critical. Hurricane Lowell reinforced the importance of that preparedness and the strength of a community that comes together when disaster strikes.

North Shore Strong is North Shore Give’s community-driven initiative focused on preparedness, recovery, and long-term resilience. We coordinate CERT training, CPR/AED instruction, and preparedness education so residents have the skills to help themselves, their families, and their neighbors when professional responders are stretched thin.

Following Hurricane Lowell in September 2026, we created the North Shore Strong Fund to help address recovery needs while continuing to strengthen the training, resources, and community connections that will prepare our North Shore for the future.

North Shore Give works with the Kauaʻi Emergency Management Agency (KEMA) Kauaʻi Fire Department (KFD) and other first-responder agencies to strengthen our community.

Donate to the North Shore Strong Fund, and you help our North Shore recover today and become stronger for tomorrow.

Ohana Relief Fest: Come Together. Have Some Fun. Recover Together.

As Kauaʻi continues to recover from the impacts of Hurricane Lowell, North Shore Give is bringing our community together for Ohana Relief Fest, a free community event on Sunday, October 18.

All activities will take place at Anaina Hou Community Park in Kilauea. After weeks of cleanup and recovery, our goal is to give families, friends and neighbors a few hours to come together and have some fun.

Along with live music (3 bands), lawn games, prize drawings and family fun, an important part of the event will be recovery resources for local residents and businesses. A few organizations will be present to provide information and connections to recovery grants, SBA disaster loans, rebuilding and reopening assistance, and other practical recovery resources.

Event proceeds will be donated to North Shore schools and will also support North Shore Strong, our expanded community resilience initiative supporting recovery while continuing our community preparedness programs.

FREE Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Training

At the heart of North Shore Strong is the free CERT Basics Training and Skills Practice Sessions. A nationally recognized program endorsed by FEMA, CERT trains residents in:

  • Disaster preparedness and risk awareness
  • Light search and rescue
  • Fire suppression
  • Basic medical triage
  • Emergency communication strategies
  • Team organization and leadership in crisis situations

Graduates don’t just complete a class, they become part of a network of trained local volunteers ready to step in when professional help may be delayed. When activated, CERT volunteers assist First Responders.

To sign up for CERT Training, contact North Shore Give CERT Co-Chair, Steve Latham: stevelatham1@gmail.com, (808) 346-8775.

CPR, AED & First Aid Training

Emergencies don’t wait, and neither should we. North Shore Ready offers certification and non-certification CPR/AED/First Aid classes to expand the number of residents prepared to respond in medical emergencies.

  • Non-certification classes make lifesaving skills accessible to everyone by removing the cost and pressure of formal testing, ensuring more people know what to do when seconds count.
  • Certification classes provide in-depth training for those who need official credentials for work or community roles.

Certification and non-certification classes are scheduled immediately following the final CERT Training class.
